IQE’s Pennsylvania plant hosts visit by First Minister of Wales

07 March 2017, Cardiff UK/Bethlehem, PA, USA: Cardiff based compound semiconductor manufacturer, IQE plc, hosted a visit on 3rd March to one of its US based manufacturing facilities by the Right Honourable Carwyn Jones, First Minister of Wales.

The First Minister, who was on an official visit to Washington and New York, took time out of his schedule to visit IQE’s state of the art manufacturing facility in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania to experience first-hand, one of the Welsh technology company’s overseas operations and to hear about the importance of international collaboration between businesses, academic institutions and government agencies in a fast moving, high-tech, global industry.

The Right Honourable Carwyn Jones was greeted by the facility's General Manager, Bruce Cochran, along with representatives from IQE’s US operations and the Group’s Welsh corporate headquarters in Cardiff. The visit included a tour of the high-tech facility and presentations emphasising the importance of compound semiconductors in twenty-first century technologies from smartphones to autonomous vehicles and from aerospace to healthcare technologies. The First Minister was also updated on the rapidly evolving compound semiconductor cluster in Wales “CS-Connected” and the major economic impact that such a cluster would generate, particular in terms of the industry’s need for highly-skilled, high value jobs.
